The Portobello Bookshop

New to the Portobello high street, The Portobello Bookshop will soon open its doors for the first time after a lengthy refurbishment period. The independent bookshop will stock over 8,000 titles and will host a vibrant programme of events.

A labour of love for everyone in the SPLINTR team, this rundown former fishing tackle shop was in a terrible state of disrepair and required extensive work to the fabric of the building. From damp proofing and replastering throughout to complete new electrical, plumbing and gas systems the bookshop was slowly restored to its former glory.

Utilising a palette of soft colours, curves and muted tones, the atmosphere created inside the bookshop is warm and welcoming. The understated shelving systems have been designed to provide a platform to showcase the huge selection of titles without distraction. The layout subtly divides the space into different areas including fiction, non fiction, graphic novels, and a really special kids area complete with colourful shelves, bespoke wall art illustrations and a reading teepee.

Evening events will be held regularly in the bookshop and the space has been designed to be opened up to facilitate large gatherings such as the official launch night.
